Kultur und Diktatur

In the organizer's words:

The Soviet dictatorship of Josef Stalin had a decisive influence on the 20th century and - judging by the current political situation in the East - unfortunately continues to have a major impact to this day. The concert and lecture "Culture and Dictatorship - Ways of Coexistence" provides a reflective insight into that time from the perspective of the resistance of intellectuals using artistic means - above all literature and music.

The literary basis is provided by texts by great Russian-language writers who dealt with the effects of the destructive violence of the dictatorship on their own society. Through their art, they were able to provide spiritual support to their fellow human beings and at the same time strengthen the will to resist.

Musically, works by Sergei Prokofiev, Dmitri Shostakovich and Joseph Achron provide direct emotional access to the topic and illustrate how the non-verbal genre of music is able to convey the most difficult things and enable lasting reflection.
