Kunst und Kompass

In the organizer's words:

The exhibition Kinder, Kinder! shows how ideas of childhood have changed between the 16th and 21st centuries. Paintings, photographs and sculptures make it clear that images of children reflect social values and emotions.

From depictions of the Madonna to portraits of aristocratic representation and scenes of poor children in the 17th century: The pictorial worlds tell of claims to power, ideals and compassion. Whereas in the past, memorial pictures of deceased children were also created, today the focus is on lifelike photographs of happy moments.

The exhibition invites visitors to rediscover the diverse role models of children. How does art shape our image of childhood? What values are shown? How have these values changed and developed over the centuries? Sophie-Charlotte Opitz, curator of the Bucerius Kunst Forum, provides a deeper understanding of the works on the tour. She will be accompanied by Matthias Bähr, the director of Hospiz Sinus. Together we will ask questions and seek answers. The discussions can be deepened over a drink afterwards.

With the Art and Compass series of guided tours, we want to create an opportunity to use art to realign values, goals and priorities. A compass helps us to find our bearings in unfamiliar terrain. By reflecting on our lives in the context of art, new impulses can arise that help us to illuminate experiences from different perspectives and broaden our view.
