5 p.m. With Britta Markatt-Labba

Britta Marakatt-Labba (born 1951 in Sápmi) uses needle and thread to translate stories into fabric - sometimes figuratively, sometimes as a collage in combination with other pieces of fabric - and always adds colorful brushstrokes. The delicate embroideries deal with the stories and mythology of the Sámi people and the nature that provides a habitat for them and their reindeer. However, they also address the threat to nature posed by the extraction of raw materials and ecological destruction, resulting in the displacement of indigenous peoples. The visual narrative on fabric is Britta Marakatt-Labba's way of asking questions and finding answers to existential thoughts. Fragile worlds are created in a fascinatingly detailed manner. The precise placement of the scenes, the interplay between background and motif, the tension between emptiness and pictorial action make Britta Marakatt-Labba's work unique. They demonstrate a feeling for pictorial spaces, for action, for vastness and tranquillity.
