As part of the International Short Film Day, we are presenting two rarely screened 8mm punk films from Japan.
In Japanese film history, which is rich in the unusual, the independent and underground cinema of the late 1970s to 80s stands out as a particularly explosive phase. Young, wild directors rebelled against the established canon of forms and themes with their debut works - realized on 8mm material and without large crews or financial resources.
In 2016, a Berlinale Forum retrospective entitled Japanese Indies from the Punk Years was dedicated to this context. We are now delighted to present two particularly exciting works in our library:
Tokyo Cabbageman K (D: Akira Ogata | JPN 1980 | 58 min) and Isolation of 1/880000 (OT: Hachijyu-Hachi-Man Bun no Ichi no Kodoku| D: Gakuryû Ishii (formerly Sogo Ishii) | JPN 1977 | 42 min).
There will be an introduction. The films will be shown as digital files in the original Japanese version with English subtitles, FSK 18. The film screening is part of the International Short Film Day, which this year has the motto "In Limbo".
The screening will take place in the PopUp at the Amerika-Gedenkbibliothek. Registration is requested.
