An Irish lute plays 80s sounds, crystalline new wave basses, a pounding bass drum with scratchy guitars accompanied by dream pop synths. And a voice that flows down the thirsty throat like a smoky whisky, but at the same time spreads bittersweet melancholy with gentle sounds. This is LAPPLÆNDER - the indie folk band from Oberhausen (NRW).
Initially founded as a pure Irish folk project, LAPPLÆNDER's sound has evolved over the years into indie folk/pop. The folk-typical basis is formed by the interplay of acoustic guitar and bass drum. Added to this are driving basses that effectively complement the groove of LAPPLÆNDER. The Irish box-neck lute (for connoisseurs: Irish bouzouki), which creates a deep ambience through the use of typical Dream Pop effects, is accompanied by broad and warm 80s synthesizers. In the middle of this multi-layered structure of pressure waves and sound clouds, the sung word shoots through, which first has to find its way through the singer's reddish-brown facial hair, but once released, fills the room harmoniously and powerfully.
LAPPLÆNDER skillfully fuse two great musical genres: folk and pop. A fusion of typical folk instruments (guitar, lute) and charming storytelling with electric hardware (electric bass, synthesizer) and song structures that we are more familiar with from popular music.
