Life of Galileo - by Bertolt Brecht - with music by Hanns Eisler - Schauspielhaus, Großes Haus

It is about the truth. When else should one deal with it than today, when lies are told everywhere? Brecht's "Life of Galileo" tells of this. About the physicist who is the first to see with his own eyes that the earth is only one planet among many. He finds heaven forsaken. And who fails with this insight because of the power of the liars and deniers of the church. Brecht asks: How far can or must I personally go to defend the truth, and what price am I willing to pay for it? And what is the role of progress at all, if it is destined to bring annihilation and destruction upon humanity? Brecht's questions have not been resolved since the play was written in 1939. Science still regularly faces a dilemma in which feasibility, ethics and responsibility cannot be reconciled. And at the same time the lie is booming again, the splitters, the detonators are on the move every day.

The production is directed by Lars-Ole Walburg, who was artistic director of Schauspiel Hannover until 2019. The title role is played by Burghart Klaußner, who in 2019 was seen in Heinrich Breloer's docudrama "Brecht" as the older Brecht and has already appeared on stage at the Schauspielhaus in "Heisenberg" and as Shylock in the "Merchant of Venice".
