The history behind the Leipzig Lodges' Ball

Almost 100 years ago, on April 4, 1925, the last "Logenball" took place in the Felsenkeller in Leipzig. Until then, the "Lodge of the Blue Crocodile" had hosted this ball once a year, which shaped the social and cultural life of the trade fair city like no other event. Stars and starlets, bourgeois and workers, soldiers of fortune and bohemians celebrated together here. In the glamorous ballroom, Mayor Karl Rothe danced alongside Marlene Dietrich, the young Willi Brandt met the Leipzig opera director Guido Barthol, the VfB goalkeeping legend Ernst Raydt sat in the front row with Leipzig underworld stars at Anita Berber's wicked dance performances. Leipzig artists such as Max Seliger and Willy Semm transformed the Felsenkeller into an expressionist dreamscape. Stage artists such as the "Original Excentric Band", the legendary "Weintraubs Syncopators", the Plagwitz "Neugeystvereyn Kokolores", the Leipzig "Rosenthal Quartett" and many others thrilled the Leipzig audience. It is no exaggeration to say that the Logenball was the hotspot of Leipzig's urban society in the 1920s.

.... It could have been like this. If the Felsenkeller archives had not been destroyed during renovation work in the 1980s, we would know more about the wild cultural life in the Felsenkeller in the 1920s. The "Lodge zum blauen Krokodil", which was re-established in 2023, is undeterred by this and organizes the ball on 5 April 2025, which could have taken place in the Felsenkeller 100 years earlier.

The "Lodge to the Blue Crocodile" is not yet revealing any details, but is already revealing this much: in addition to numerous extraordinary artists performing in all areas of the Felsenkeller, guests at the lodge ball will be offered necromancy, in the Berber Bar the leaders of the German workers' movement will drop their clothes and in the cellar catacombs, a Caligari-like enchanted dreamscape will be created as a reminiscence of the expressionists of the early lodge balls. A rock cellar that has NEVER been experienced like this before.

One thing is certain: the revival will be THE social event of the year. The Master of the "Lodge of the Blue Crocodile", Count Alexander von Hohenstein, assures: "We will present a ball that the trade fair city has not seen for a long time."
