Sometimes life forces you to take a break, whether you want to or not. My novel is about what it feels like when you can no longer keep running on the hamster wheel of “always having to keep going.” And: how life can go on after a major setback. When I was confronted with personal disasters myself, I was pretty much on my own, and I didn’t want that for my protagonist, Hanna. I was drawn to creating characters who show that humor is essential in difficult times and that solidarity sustains us. What I’ve learned is this: You don’t know how strong you are until you have to be strong. That’s the kind of self-confidence I want to pass on. I hope my book can offer hope and comfort to those who, like me, could use a break right now.

Lena Kupke, born in 1986, studied English and history in Bonn. She is an author and stand-up comedian. Her non-fiction book *Truth or Dare: What I’ve Learned About Being a Woman* was published in 2021. “Pause” is her debut novel. Lena Kupke lives with her family in Cologne.
