Wit, lamentation, world-weariness. Sir Simon Rattle, always energetic, once again spans a sonically powerful arc: from jazzy humoresque to expressive settings of black African poetry to the raging collapse of the passions.
Paul Hindemith delightfully shaped a Bach fugue into a grooving march in his "Ragtime (Well-Tempered)." Alexander Zemlinsky poured the poetry of American people of color into sound with abandon: lyrical, angry, visionary (Lester Lynch sings). And Gustav Mahler, in his 6th Symphony, vacillated between hope and hopelessness. An emotional parforceride with the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra, whose chief conductor since the beginning of the season is Sir Simon Rattle.
