In the organizer's words:
Come join us for Peter Wohlleben’s book reading at your Hugendubel bookstore in Cottbus!
His latest book, “Bacteria—The Secret Heroes,” is a delight for anyone interested in everyday knowledge and eager to understand biological processes. In a well-researched yet lighthearted and accessible way, Peter Wohlleben—author of the million-copy bestseller “The Hidden Life of Trees”—guides you through the surprising world of bacteria. He shows that we are made of bacteria and how profoundly they shape us.
About the book:
Peter Wohlleben opens up an exciting world to us: an understanding of organisms that are invisible to the naked eye but shape the fate of humanity. They are not only practical helpers in everyday life—without bacteria, there would be no yogurt, no salami, and no sauerkraut—and they live on our skin, on our tongues, or in our intestines, but also in every cell of our bodies, where they control us according to their own needs. The author shows that we are made of bacteria and how profoundly they shape us, for example by producing hormones that influence our moods. He explains how they motivate us to exercise, help determine our weather, and support us in tackling the climate crisis. And that we should cooperate with them and be considerate of them so that both they and we can thrive.
Peter Wohlleben revolutionized our understanding of trees. Now, with the same vivid clarity, he guides us through the surprising realm of bacteria.
An ideal book for anyone interested in everyday knowledge and eager to understand biological processes. After all, we encounter bacteria everywhere, around the clock. When you realize that they’re smart, communicate, and plan joint actions—even though they’re so small we can’t see them—this book is not just like a microscope, but like a door into their realm. With depth and playful ease, Peter Wohlleben, author of the million-copy bestseller *The Hidden Life of Trees*, guides us through this surprising world.
About the Author:
Peter Wohlleben, born in 1964, wanted to become a conservationist even as a small child. After studying forestry, he worked for over twenty years as a civil servant for the state forestry administration. To put his ecological ideas into practice, he resigned from his position in 2006 and took over a 1,200-hectare forest area in the Eifel as a forester. There, he founded his own environmentally friendly forestry operation: species-appropriate tree management, horses instead of logging machines, beech trees instead of spruce, a complete ban on the use of chemicals, and no more clear-cutting. He also discovered a passion for writing books. He appears as a guest on numerous TV shows and shares his knowledge through books and seminars, as well as through events such as nature tours and log cabin building workshops. He has received several awards for his ecological approach.
In 2016, he founded the Forest Academy, which imparts knowledge about forests and offers nature experiences, and where he continues to work as an instructor to this day. He hosts the podcast “Peter and the Forest,” in which he speaks with experts, scientists, activists, and celebrities about ways we can better protect the climate and the forest, why biodiversity is so important, and what each of us can do to ensure the success of the green transition in Germany. The degree program “Social-Ecological Forest Management (SÖW),” which he initiated together with Professor Pierre Ibisch, launched in the fall of 2024 at the Eberswalde University for Sustainable Development (HNEE). His latest bestseller, “Bacteria—The Secret Heroes,” was recently published.
