In 1901, a major glassmakers' strike breaks out at the Gerresheim glassworks near Düsseldorf. Bille, the daughter of a bottle maker, dreams of emigrating to America with her lover, but he becomes a strikebreaker and her family is plunged into an existential crisis by the labor dispute. Leonie, daughter of the factory doctor, grows up in middle-class circumstances, but feels constricted and seeks to join an artistic bohemian society. Her father, however, has traditional marriage plans for her. Both women live in the same place, in seemingly separate worlds, but they share the same longing for freedom and self-determination.
