Who guards our democracy?
The fundamental rights that are negotiated in the Federal Constitutional Court concern us all.
But who wears the red robes and how decisions are made is largely unknown. This book tells the story, vividly and personally, from the perspective of a former judge after twelve years in office.
How does the court actually work? How does it ensure that everyone is heard? And how do eight very different personalities reach a consensus even in the face of major controversies? So how does the Constitutional Court protect democracy - and why do we need to protect it?
Susanne Baer, born in 1964, was a judge at the Federal Constitutional Court for twelve years.
Today she teaches at the Humboldt University in Berlin, where she founded the Clinic for Fundamental and Human Rights and the Institute for Law and Society, and is committed - also in London, Toronto, Ann Arbor and Vienna - to increasing knowledge about law.
