It is often said that sport unites people across origin, faith, appearance and identity. Soccer in particular, with its global glamour and its appeal to the most diverse milieus and backgrounds, is said to have great integrative power.

But even in the open-minded modern soccer world, there are always racism scandals, exclusion and devaluation.

In his reports, Ronny Blaschke takes a look behind the scenes and provides both historical and current examples of structural discrimination. For example, soccer was sometimes integrated into colonial power structures, some of which still shape associations, fan stands and the media today. However, the author also shows the long and persistent battles that black players in countries such as Germany and England had to (and still have to) fight in order to receive the same recognition as their white teammates as people and athletes.

Numerous global examples make it clear that soccer still has a long way to go to be the non-discriminatory sport that campaigns and announcements like to invoke.

The book has been named Football Book of the Year 2024. The subsequent panel discussion will shed light on the current situation in amateur and youth soccer.

This will be followed by open discussion rounds, followed by watching soccer together: Nations League quarter-final "Germany - Italy".

An event organized by FAIReinskultur in cooperation with the Stadtsportverband Bergisch Gladbach and the Fußballkreis Berg, with contributions from the human rights group of the Otto-Hahn-Gymnasium ("Schule ohne Rassismus - Schule mit Courage").
