"Sonic Fabrics - Lagos to Hamburg Networks" is an interdisciplinary project that explores the sonic, visual and cultural overlaps between Lagos (Nigeria) and Hamburg. Developed by Nadja Rix, Joana Welteke and Jere Ikongio as part of the "Artists and Scientists in Residency" program at ligeti zentrum Harburg, the project explores historical trade connections, in particular the colonial trade of Dutch Wax Fabric (Dutch Waxprint), and reinterprets these narratives through contemporary participatory art practices. The work will be presented during SuedLese 2025 at the Kultur Wohnzimmer in Harburg.
The project critically examines Hamburg's role during the colonial era, when the city was a central hub in the trade networks that connected Western Europe with West Africa. Historically, Hamburg not only facilitated the export of fabric patterns, but also became an influential hub for German trade in the region. Against this background, the project examines how colonial trade practices, such as the trade in Dutch wax fabrics, contributed to the formation of cultural identities and urban infrastructures.
The event takes place as part of SuedLese 2025.
