Four days of browsing, listening & discovering

From May 9 to 12, the "Literature & Live Music" event will offer over 12,000 pre-loved books, records and related items for little money and for the benefit of good causes at Düsseldorf's Matthäikirche. The event will be accompanied by readings by CORRECTIV journalist Marcus Bensmann ("Der AfD-Komplex") and author Christa Holtei ("Mörderjahr 1929"). This year's program will be rounded off by five piano concerts. Admission is free.

Books, recordings, games & co.

The assortment consists of donated books, from current novels and crime thrillers to children's books and foreign-language fiction to antiquarian finds on art, architecture, philosophy, poetry, history and natural sciences. There are also plenty of books about Düsseldorf as well as DVDs, CDs, records and games. Most of the books are sold for 50 cents per centimeter of book thickness, a few selected works are priced individually. The book market is always open from 12 noon to 6 p.m. on the days of the event.

Sales for good causes

All proceeds from the book market go to good causes, this year half to CORRECTIV - Recherchen für die Gesellschaft gemeinnützige GmbH (https://correctiv.org) and half to the association Mentor - Die Leselernhelfer Düsseldorf e.V. (www.mentor-duesseldorf.de).

Two readings and five concerts: the program

Three piano concerts are on the program on the Thursday of the event, a concert and a reading on Friday, and the same on Saturday.

Concert: Jiando
The pianist Jiando sees himself as a storyteller on 88 keys. Alternating between interpretations of pieces by other composers, he likes to immerse himself in the atmosphere of the place where he is playing. His fingers intuitively follow the mood of the day.

Reading: Christa Holtei reads from "Murder Year 1929"
The year 1929: Düsseldorf in the Weimar Republic, a growing city in times of upheaval. Change is in the air, a break with the Prussian stink, young life, flourishing businesses, the magnificent boulevard Kö. But shadows also hang over it: Nazi marches, attacks, fear, uncertainty and a nameless phantom wreaking its murderous havoc. In her novel, Düsseldorf author Christa Holtei takes a look right into the heart of this "murderous year 1929". In order to make the feeling of life back then more tangible, Christa Holtei shows contemporary pictures during the reading and provides a historical context.

Concert: Nageeb Gardizi
Born in Afghanistan, Nageed Gardizi studied at the Robert Schumann Hochschule Düsseldorf (Szidon class) and has been working as a concert pianist since 2002. His repertoire is varied and often builds bridges between the European masters of classical music and the musical traditions of his Afghan origins. The concert as part of Literature & Live Music 2024 will take up pieces by composers who were branded 'degenerate' under National Socialism, including Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco (1895 - 1968), Maurice Ravel (1875 - 1937), Béla Bartók (1881 - 1945) and Ervin Schulhoff (1894 - 1942). The compositions and their creators will be placed in historical context.

Reading: Marcus Bensmann reads from "The AfD Complex"
On January 10, 2024, CORRECTIV published its research into the "Secret Plan against Germany" (https://correctiv.org/aktuelles/neue-rechte/2024/01/10/geheimplan-remigration-vertreibung-afd-rechtsextreme-november-treffen), since when hundreds of thousands of people have taken to the streets in protest against racism, exclusion and populism. Four weeks before the European elections, CORRECTIV journalist Marcus Bensmann will read from the book "Der AfD-Komplex" (The AfD Complex), which summarizes the research on and about the AfD over the past eight years, as part of Literature & Live Music. The subsequent public discussion will be moderated by Christian Herrendorf, Editorial Director at VierNull Media.

Background to Literatur & Livemusik
Once a year, Literatur & Livemusik offers donated books and related items for sale for little money in the foyer of Matthäikirche (Lindemannstraße 70, Düsseltal). This year, the range is larger than ever before: over 12,000 books and other media are looking forward to new owners. The event is accompanied by concerts by local musicians and readings by local authors in the church. All proceeds from the event, which is organized on a voluntary basis, go to good causes. The 2024 edition is already the seventh of its kind.
