MAGICAL INDIA
A journey through the fascinating subcontinent
After his impressive IRAN report from 2024, Thorge Berger returns to the Bürgerhaus stage with profound and expressive images to present his favorite country INDIA - with its people, sacred places, mysterious festivals and incomparable nature.
The award-winning photographer participates several times in the Kumbh Mela, the largest spiritual festival in the world, where he merges with millions of believers on the banks of the holy rivers. In the south, he accompanies the martial arts fighter Meenakshi Amma Gurukkal, who passes on a martial art that has been handed down for centuries to young girls. In Calcutta, he meets the "German Doctors" who help the poorest of the poor in the slums. The mysterious Theyyam festival is breathtaking, where brave people throw themselves into huge piles of embers in front of the faithful, walk through the fire and become living deities. He is pelted with paint at the Holi festival and watches in Mumbai as huge statues of the elephant god Ganesha are handed over to the sea.
Diversity in nature too: In the national parks of central India, Thorge Berger tracks down Bengal tigers, the largest big cats in the world. He roams through lush green tea plantations and the breathtaking landscapes of Ladakh and Kashmir, where he gets to know the Muslim perspective on the Kashmir conflict. Finally, in the Himalayas, he captures fascinating images of the rare snow leopard in freezing temperatures.
