Over the years, saxophonist Ingrid Laubrock and drummer Tom Rainey have formed a deep musical bond. In addition to their collaborations in larger groups, their duo project in particular is among their strongest output. Laubrock is one of the most ambitious musicians on the New York scene and is constantly searching for new compositional ideas that serve as a creative foundation for her improvisational inventiveness. Rainey, on the other hand, who has worked with iconoclasts like Tim Berne as well as traditionalists like Kenny Werner, is the kind of musician who fits in seamlessly anywhere and routinely brings success to whatever they are involved in. The duo's collaboration with Puerto Rican bassist Brandon Lopez began several years ago. "No Es La Playa" (2022), the multigenerational trio's debut album, is the result of wide-awake free improvisations and provides optimal conditions for Lopez's strong playing, marked by irrepressible curiosity. As equal partners, the three propel each other to the same degree that they ground each other's free playing. Lopez seems to intuitively understand the unique connection and artistic sensibility of his partners and finds access to their idiosyncratic exchange with astonishing ease. At the same time, he is not intimidated, always asserting himself and steering the music in new directions. The concert at Jazzfest Berlin is part of the trio's first European tour.
