Luiz Roque Estufa

In the organizer's words:

In summer 2024, KW presents Estufa (Greenhouse), the first survey exhibition by artist Luiz Roque (* 1979, BR), whose work is situated between expanded cinema, visual art, and critical theory. In his artistic practice, he combines an interest in modernism, pop culture, queer (bio)politics and science fiction by depicting the challenges of various - predominantly Brazilian - subcultures and marginalized voices and developing alternative realities.

Roque's sculptural video installations explore the fine line between form and content, where recording techniques and screening methods are as important as the subject matter they present. The artist's anachronistic approach results in timeless montages and environments, revealing the urgent socio-political concerns of these communities. Roque's fascination with uncanny, dream-like atmospheres is reflected on a small scale in his ceramic works. The exhibition at KW showcases a body of work spanning two decades - including new ceramics and a newly commissioned film installation - and is accompanied by a publication that further explores Roque's work.
