Do two people really mean the same thing when they promise each other love? Do they swear the same thing when they commit to a future together? The opera "Madama Butterfly" poses these fundamental questions through a love story that breaks down between two cultures and their different values.
The naval officer Benjamin Franklin Pinkerton buys a house. He wants to live here with Cio-Cio-San, known as Butterfly - even if it means that she has to break away from her traditions and her family. What is a serious, well-considered step for her, the young man takes a far more carefree, present- and ego-oriented approach.
In "Madama Butterfly", Puccini has congenially combined Italian operatic tradition and Japanese folk song tradition to write a highly political opera about the disregard for differences. Director Mirella Weingarten's first work in Cottbus is also about projections of ideas and expectations, especially in love.
