A veritable explosion of dresses fills the stage: evening gowns, wedding dresses, nightgowns and colorful floral dresses - they flutter and fly through the space, are thrown over and off, knotted and torn, serve as whips or aprons.
40 dresses form the costume and stage set of "Maldonne". 40 dresses that the five dancers slip on. Like the different roles and identities that women take on in their lives. They are the cloak of superheroines and at the same time the corset they have to squeeze themselves into.
In "Maldonne", French choreographer Leïla Ka explores femininity in all its facets: the constraints of social expectations, rebellion, fragility and, above all, the community of being a woman. The choreography reflects this complexity: expressive, angry gestures are followed by delicate, soft movements and vulnerable moments. Sometimes the dancers passionately sing along to the soundtrack, then suddenly all music falls silent and only the dancers' breath forms the rhythm. "Maldonne" is an ensemble piece - carried by the dynamics of togetherness.
The dancer and choreographer Leïla Ka is a shooting star on the international dance scene. Her artistic roots lie in urban dance; without any academic dance training, she later danced in Maguy Marin's ensemble and most recently choreographed for Beyoncé. As a choreographer, Leïla Ka has developed an immediate and gripping language of movement.
The title is derived from the card game and refers to a wrongly dealt hand, which means the game has to start all over again. For Leïla Ka, "Maldonne" addresses the position of women in society: the cards are unfairly dealt, they should be reshuffled. "Maldonne" is a powerful portrait of sisterhood.
