Mimi Schulz, the protagonist of Präkels' bestselling novel "Als ich mit Hitler Schnapskirschenaß", is always there. As an astonished ghost, she accompanies her author on reading trips to small East German towns, Greece, Italy and faraway Minnesota. Others stay behind along the way. Rani, Arash and Sohra, for example, who simply disappear after the school vacations as if they had never been there. Or Büderich, who took it too far, and Lutz, who got lost on his way to the "land of freedom" in Frankfurt's train station district. And then there's Ingo, without whose violent death Mimi Schulz might never have existed. He is suddenly back at the pub table and wants his face back. Manja Präkels tells of people who have become characters and characters you can't get rid of.

MANJA PRÄKELS (born 1974 in Zehdenick/Mark) has been a key literary voice on the post-reunification period in East Germany since her debut novel "Als ich mit Hitler Schnapskirschen aß" (2017; tr: When I ate schnapps cherries with Hitler), which has been translated and adapted for the stage several times. A first collection of her political-poetic essays was published in 2022 under the title "Welt im Widerhall oder war das eine Plastik- tüte?". This was followed in 2025 by the volume "Extremwetterlagen. Reportages from a new Germany" (with Alexander Leistner, Tina Pruschmann and Barbara Thériault). Präkels develops writing workshops for schools and is the founder of the band Der Singende Tresen. She has received numerous awards for her literary and musical work, including the Alfred Döblin Scholarship, the German Youth Literature Prize and the Anna Seghers Prize. She was a writer-in-residence in Rheinsberg and a Casa Baldi scholarship holder.
