The monstrous story of the years-long rape of Gisèle Pelicot by her own husband has shocked and shocked the world far beyond France. French-born Manon Garcia, Professor of Philosophy at the Free University of Berlin, attended the trial in Avignon and analyzes the abysses that opened up in the Pelicot case in her latest book "Mit Männern leben - Überlegungen zum Pelicot-Prozess" (Suhrkamp).

Manon Garcia was particularly competent for this philosophical accompaniment to the trial, as she has been thinking about questions of sexual consent for a long time. Her important philosophical book on the subject, "The Conversation of the Sexes - A Philosophy of Consent", was published by Suhrkamp in 2023. In it, she described the many gray areas of communication, showed that sexual encounters do not always resemble a contractual situation and sketched out an optimistic scenario for the future of sexual understanding between men and women.

The Pelicot case, however, goes far beyond previous debates about "no means no" or "yes means yes", it tragically raises very fundamental questions about male violence, it leaves us speechless and at a loss. Time for a philosophical reflection.
