On his new album "Letter to Milos", Marco Mezquida reunites his trio, with whom he already recorded the two albums "Ravel's Dreams" (2017) and Talismán (2019). Together with Aleix Tobias on drums and percussion and Martín Meléndez on cello, they create a playful and colorful sound that runs through all the compositions. The three return to familiar realms of traditional Iberian music, indulge in their fondness for the idea of syncretism (in this case the combination of Son Cubano and Brazilian samba) or devote themselves to their usual excursions into romanticism, but with borrowings from free jazz, blues, circus music and a whole lot of groove. For Marco Mezquida, the album is a sincere testimony to his artistic identity in the current times and, on a personal level, a love letter to his son in his first year of life.
"Letter to Milos" forges new and branching paths into the familiar soundscape. The meditative and hypnotic sound of "Nacimiento" or "Infinito" contrasts with the powerfully expressive groove of "Charrada de la vida" or "Sonajero". Progressive pop such as in "El cielo en tus brazos" is transformed into blues in "Percebes y zamburiñas", minimalist punk in "Pauta completa" and free structures in "Onírico" and "Umbilical". The music always pays homage to Iberian music with its various styles (Corrido Maragato, Ajechao, Sorteao or Bulería). Other influences from Cuba and Brazil can also be sensed, as well as echoes of Romanticism (Brahms in particular) and the world of jazz. All of this can be found in this musical letter "Letter to Milos".
