Mareille Merck - LARUS

Since this year, the band "Larus" has been touring with a new, international line-up: with the bassist Louise Knobil (Lausanne/Paris) from French-speaking Switzerland and the drummer Hendrik Eichler from Cologne, Merck has found two musicians who are as independent as they are innovative, with whom she brings her original compositions to life. Mareille Merck draws on influences from fingerstyle techniques, allows her origins in rock music to shine through and skillfully interweaves these guitaristic nuances with clear jazzy structures and memorable motifs.

Merck started the band in 2018, at that time with a different line-up. The years of band work have already brought numerous highlights, including two albums in co-production with Radio SRF 2 Kultur: "Fadenschlag" (2021) and "Stille Wasser" (2023). In 2021, LARUS was nominated for the ZKB Jazz Prize. Special concerts included the opening of the Langnau Jazz Nights in a double concert with the Mike Stern Band, Cully Jazz, Jazz Onze+, Schlachthof Bremen, Moods Zurich and many more.

Merck, Knobil and Eichler see making music together as a journey in which they have courage, a thirst for adventure and a willingness to take risks. Their companions along the way: meaningful compositions and eventful improvisations. And just as "Larus", the seagull, flies over the most diverse landscapes, Mareille Merck and her band carry us with their music over lively beaches, wide fields or rocky coasts.

The Neue Zürcher Zeitung wrote about the album "Stille Wasser": "Stille Wasser' is indeed an album that is as colorful as it is dense, melodically rich and peppered with surprising changes in tempo and dynamics. The surface may be smooth, but the depths are roaring." (NZZ, January 08, 2023, Manfred Papst )

Merck studied with Wolfgang Muthspiel and Lionel Loueke, among others, has already performed on stage with greats such as John McLaughlin (Montreux) and teaches jazz guitar at the Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts.
