Margareth Menezes is one of the greatest representatives of the Axé movement, samba funk and samba reggae from Salvador de Bahia. She is known for her stirring music, her powerful voice and her carnival and television appearances. It has been a long journey from her humble beginnings in the vibrant capital of the state of Bahia to her surprise appointment as Minister of Culture by the current Brazilian President Lula da Silva in January 2023. In the 1980s, she was one of the first to bring the raucous fun of Bahia's street carnival to the concert stage. Since then, her name has been mentioned in the same breath as famous Brazilian artists such as Gilberto Gil, Maria Bethânia, Caetano Veloso and Daniela Mercury. On stage, Margareth Menezes is a pyrotechnic ball of energy - her voice, a rich, dark-toned instrument, screams and crackles in the fast songs and whispers with wild sensuality in the slower numbers.
