CABARET
Music, dance, quirky jokes, lots of glitter and plenty of surprises. So far, so familiar. The album "Cabaret" by Norwegian saxophonist and composer Marius Neset takes the listener into a world of breathtakingly wide-ranging musical imagination. And even though Neset returns to a small ensemble here after his highly acclaimed orchestral works, you always feel as if you are listening to more than just five musicians. As on the album "Happy" from 2022, Maris Neset's quintet consists of Elliot Galvin (keyboards), Magnus Hjorth (piano), Conor Chaplin (electric bass) and Anton E- ger (drums & percussion). On "Happy", the musicians played together in this constellation for the first time. They are now an experienced working band: "We have played many concerts and the way this band has developed in this time is simply unique for me," recaps Marius Neset. After releases with the London Sinfonietta (including an appearance at the Royal Albert Hall at the BBC Proms), a solo saxophone record and a duo suite with classical piano star Leif Ove Andsnes, the quintet is "like coming home" for Marius Neset.
"like coming home". At the same time, "Cabaret" was about exploring the musical possibilities of this line-up even more deeply.

There is so much different music in "Cabaret" - from the crazy dance of the two opening pieces, to the cool lyricism of "Song for Maja", the exuberance of "Midsummer Beats", the vastness of "The Ocean", the energy of "Quantum Dance" and the melancholy of "Forgotten Ballet". The folkloristic "Wedding In Geiranger", written for Neset's own engagement last summer, closes the album. "Cabaret" is an eventful and dramatic journey, at the end of which the listener will certainly want to start all over again.
