He writes the new "Faust". He is just getting by. He is looking for an apartment after he and his family were evicted from Dean Street. He discusses with comrades, with the forefather Abraham as well as with animated pictures of construction workers. He treats himself to hydrotherapy. He is reflected in the windows of sex stores, wanders through Moscow nightclubs, winks at us from pictures. He sits with Jenny in Hampstead and watches a live broadcast of the collapse of the Soviet bloc. Then he switches to Dallas - or another endless series from a new world subject to the laws of the market.
He eludes us. Founder of scientific socialism. Philosopher and poet. Prophet and deceiver. Loving father. Sad clown. Devil! Karl Marx. It is said that he had a more fundamental influence on our present day than any other modern intellectual. He fought for justice and solidarity - and yet we know him primarily as the inspirer of cruel dictatorships. What do we really know about him? And why should we even want to know anything about him today?
