TheNiederdeutsche Bühne Flensburgis pleased to present a special guest performance:“Mascha Kaléko—Tightrope Walker Without a Safety Net,” a theatrical and musical evening by Rainer Hansen.

Mascha Kaléko was the unmistakable voice of Berlin in the 1920s and 1930s. As a leading figure of the New Objectivity movement, she captivated a wide audience with her poetry, which was as intelligent as it was true to life. With subtle humor, a keen eye, and great humanity, she found words to express the worries, hopes, and longings of the people of her time—and created texts that remain as relevant today as ever.

This theatrical evening traces the poet’s moving life journey: from her successes in Berlin’s literary circles centered around the legendary Romanisches Café, through her expulsion by the Nazi regime and exile in New York and Jerusalem, to her rediscovery in Germany after World War II. Biographical milestones are interwoven with Kaléko’s timeless poems and texts, which speak of love, homelessness, loss, and an unshakable faith in the power of life.
