Material Stories: Upcycling zwischen Lagos und Hamburg mit Peter D. Abayomi

The workshop combines practical design with discussions about sustainability, the circular economy and global perspectives. A particular focus will be on the knowledge of African communities and especially on Peter's Eran Jije Project in Lagos, which has developed creative and resource-saving forms of reuse in many different contexts. Participants are invited to contribute their own ideas, rethink materials and see their hands as tools for change.

How can new stories, objects and ideas for the future be created from discarded materials? In this practical upcycling workshop, Nigerian artist Peter D. Abayomi invites participants to see waste not as worthless, but as a starting point for creativity, exchange and ecological action.

Peter D. Abayomi is a multidisciplinary artist from Lagos, Nigeria. His practice combines sound, performative works, upcycling and site-specific material research. Based in the urban context of Lagos, he explores environmental sustainability, climate issues, resource waste and social inequalities.
Using found and reused materials, Abayomi develops immersive and community-oriented works that reveal hidden histories and question power structures. He is particularly influenced by the ecological realities of coastal communities in Lagos, which he sees not as passive victims, but as places of resilience, innovation and ecological agency.
As the founder of the Eran Jije Project, he advocates a culture of upcycling and recycling and creates participatory formats that promote awareness, exchange and local action. His work combines art, environmental awareness, social responsibility and indigenous forms of knowledge.
