Three generations: Smetana, father of the Czech national style, laid the foundation stone with the cycle My Fatherland in 1879. Full of originality, he translated his folk music inspirations into music, and with sensitive instrumentation, he translated the poetry and power of his originals into music. Leoš Janáček, primarily an opera composer, composed very little for the concert hall - so it is no wonder that suites were created from his popular stage works. Vitēzlav Novák, a pupil of Dvořák, followed in Smetana's footsteps with his symphonic poem and created an exuberant tone painting of his beloved mountains.

The concert introduction will take place at 5.15 pm in the Schumann corner of the Gewandhaus.

The concert will be broadcast on MDR KLASSIK and MDR KULTUR the same evening at 7.30 pm. It can then be listened to on www.mdr-klassik.de.
