The silent film of the 1920s was in search of great material, and Faust offers everything that great cinema needs: a devil's pact for eternal youth, a love story, the forces of good and evil, seduction, social ostracism and finally redemption through love. Murnau's expressionist style gave the story an impressive presentation, supported by a musical accompaniment originally composed by Werner Richard Heymann using motifs by Richard Wagner and Richard Strauss. Bernd Schultheis wrote new music for the film - the score was composed in 1999 and has been performed with great success ever since.
