George Frideric Handel composed his Messiah, which tells the story of Christian salvation in three parts, in 1741 and 1742. Mozart's version was written for a performance in Vienna in 1789; he adapted Handel's composition to the tastes of the audience in order to make it more successful. He replaced the English text with a German translation and altered the instrumentation in order to come closer to contemporary sound ideals. He took into account the latest developments in playing technique and instrument making and used the "newly" invented clarinets. Mozart did not touch the composition - a sign of his respect for the master from Halle/Saale.
