What is there to know in the world? Faust has studied everything and yet feels nothing - except frustration. He even leaves the boundaries of natural science and devotes himself to the metaphysical, but the world of spirits rejects him as not equal. How can he recognize what holds the world / together at its core? Disgusted by life, he decides to give up. Then he is joined by a seemingly human assistant, omniscient, magical, free of moral doubts. She gives him new strength and shows him the other, dark side of life, which makes Faust a whole person who from then on strives ever further, with an almost insatiable greed for knowledge and power.

Goethe's Faust is a life's work - for at every stage of his life he revised his drama of all dramas. The ageing Goethe was no opponent of modernity, but he sensed the dangers of approaching industrialization and mechanization and, repelled by all things revolutionary, the impending violence of unleashed mass communication.
