Hamburg, Station 16 - Reading

In 1976, 23-year-old Polle is transferred against his will to the toughest police station in the country: 16 in Hamburg's St. Pauli district. In contrast to the world-famous Davidwache, however, it is not located in the colorful neon lights of the Reeperbahn, but in the dirtier and darker streets of the district. What Polle encounters here on the job often goes far beyond the limits of what is tolerable: neglect, violent crime, abuse, human trafficking. The rules of engagement learned at police school prove to be almost useless in the neighborhood, and the old-established 16s have long since created their own moral compass. Polle's mentor is the experienced street cop Werner, who, like an old Western sheriff, decides exclusively according to his own rules and repeatedly plunges Polle into conflicts of conscience. Polle then meets two completely different women, Christa, the innkeeper's daughter, and Melanie, a prostitute, almost at the same time, who will shape his professional and private life.

Hamburg, Wache 16 is not just Polle's story, but a large ensemble piece, an epic from the red and blue light milieu. A mixture of Game of Thrones and The Buddenbrooks with a lot of unprotected sex.

Hamburg, Wache 16 is a portrait of the times and mores of the 1970s in Hamburg's Kiez district, culminating in a dramatic finale in which Polle has to choose between two families: His own and the cop family...

On 13.4.26 at 19:30 Michael Ehnert will present his novel in person at the St. Pauli Theater. However, you shouldn't expect a conventional reading from someone who can't sit still. Ehnert will only be giving literary samples, but he will also be talking about Hamburg in the 70s and 80s, about theater, film, St. Pauli and about his family history, on which his novel is based. A stand-up reading with Q & A and book signing.
