Synopsis
NEW YORK 1938: Orson Welles makes radio history with the Mercury Theater on the Air. In record time, the writer Howard Koch is asked to write an adaptation of the sci-fi classic "War of the Worlds". The radio play sounds like real news - as if aliens were actually wiping out the entire human race. During the broadcast on Halloween evening, mass panic breaks out across the country. Police storm the radio station, but Orson forces his ensemble to play through to the bitter end. He is prepared to risk everything for fame ...
"Orson Welles and the War of the Worlds" is a live radio play about the documentary and fictional stories of this historic radio production: about murderous acting rehearsals, threats of censorship and the reactions of hysterical radio listeners. The focus is on questions of fame-seeking, fear of death and the credibility of the media.
Format
A live radio play is head cinema for the ears: The speakers slip into different roles with their voices, while the foley artist brings the setting of the 1920s to life acoustically. She is supported by atmospheric recordings, live music and an atmospheric lighting and stage concept. It is up to the audience whether they follow the action on stage or immerse themselves in their imagination with their eyes closed.
