Minimöbel: Stühle für Kinder
In the organizer's words:
What functions can a chair have? Do children prefer to move, swing and play rather than sit still? From a child's point of view - do they even need a chair? The exhibition "Mini furniture: Chairs for children" at the MK&G focuses on trying things out and playing: Visitors are invited to explore these questions in a playful and child-centered way. A selection of over 130 historical and contemporary children's chairs from the Reinke private collection and the MK&G collection showcases the design diversity of child-friendly furniture over two centuries: from popular high chairs and models from the early 19th century such as the "Stabelle" to Art Nouveau and Bauhaus objects and pop design from the 1960s to the present day. Iconic designs meet lesser-known design objects - the spectrum ranges from miniatures of classic adult chairs such as the "Panton Junior" by Verner Panton to chairs with a fixing function as well as educational play and reform furniture that support the motor, social and creative development of children.
The focus of the exhibition is on participation - visitors are invited to join in at interactive stations: Children can paint colorful traces on mobile companions of the "Wirbel Wichtel", making the connection between furniture, movement and play visible. Different sitting heights can be tried out with an oversized plug-in game - and different postures can be discovered in a playful way. At a stamping and painting station, young and old designers can create their own individual chair designs and get creative with the four figures in the exhibition - Dös, Wackel, Hotzl and Pling. In addition, selected seating furniture, including an armchair and a play chair, invite visitors to try out different forms of sitting.
The exhibition design was developed by Max Guderian, the exhibition graphics were created by Larissa Mantel.
The exhibition is supported by the Exhibition Fund of the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg and the Hans Brökel Foundation for Science and Culture.
