August Sander is considered one of the world's most important portrait photographers. But he also photographed Cologne. The photo book "Köln - wie es war" (Cologne - as it was) is one of the most beautiful photo books on Cologne, not only because it shows an undestroyed Cologne. Rather, Sander has captured the city in its fundamental cultural and historical significance from the time before the Second World War. Sorted into 16 portfolios, his pictures show squares, public buildings, churches and pictures above the roofs in his typical pictorial language. He took many pictures on the roof of the Hansahochhaus, which can be compared very well with today's Cologne. We take the paternoster up there. We then continue in Sander's footsteps through the city center, ending in the Mediapark. Some August Sander photographs can be seen in the current exhibition of the Photographic Collection/SK Stiftung Kultur "Blick in die Zeit". All those who have taken part in the tour will receive Free admission to the exhibition afterwards (on Friday ONLY) by showing their Urlaub in Köln ticket. A good opportunity to see the pictures before the exhibition closes on July 7!
The meeting point is on the green area between the Maybach and Saturn. Due to the European Championships, the event will take place at 3 pm. We would like to thank the Koerfer Group for their cooperation, especially Ms. Kirsten Steinmeier-Räder.
We compare past and present from the Hansahochhaus to St. Ursula, St. Gereon, St. Cäcilien, St. Maria im Kapitol, St. Kolumba and the Dischhaus.
