A Tunisian-French family drama by Leyla Bouzid. Starring Eya Bouteraa, Karim Rmadi, and Hiam Abbass.
Lilia (Eya Bouteraa), who lives in Paris, travels to her native Tunisia to attend her uncle Daly’s (Karim Rmadi) funeral. She is accompanied by her partner Alice (Marion Barbeau), who, however, stays at a nearby hotel rather than at the family home in Tunisia. Even Lilia’s mother (Hiam Abbass) has no idea about her daughter’s lesbian relationship, which would not only bring shame upon the family but is also a criminal offense in Tunisia.
A moving and elegantly staged family drama about identity, family, and the destructive power of the unspoken: In *In a Soft Voice*, Tunisian-French director Leyla Bouzid tells with gentle power how the past haunts the present and can thus point the way to a new future. Hiam Abbass, one of the great actresses of world cinema, shines in this masterful film, which inspires courage and, step by step, unleashes powerful emotions.
