Advent markets in Munich date back to the year 1320 in the city's oldest council statutes (source: ISSN 0342-1668, historischer Verein OBB). The medieval market authentically presents medieval market events - just as they might have taken place in Munich. It also makes many historical references to Munich's city history in the Middle Ages and presents these in a vivid and tangible way. Munich was first mentioned as "Munichen" in 1158. The place name was already derived in the Middle Ages from "munich/münich", meaning "monk", which is why the first surviving city seal (1239) already shows a monk's head with a pointed cap. Due to misleading depictions, the monk was later interpreted as a child and thus became the "Münchner Kindl".

From the very beginning, the Medieval Christmas Market on Wittelsbacherplatz has made historical references to the city of Munich and presents these to its guests in a vivid way. Its historical character makes it particularly atmospheric. The market on Wittelsbacherplatz has been taking place since 2005 and it can be said that it has developed into a popular meeting place during this time and is valued as something special among Munich's Christmas markets due to its detailed historical design.
