Mocky and Friends - LA Meets Berlin Jam with Special Guest
Mocky, the Canadian musician, producer and multi-instrumentalist Dominic Salole, is back with his legendary "Mocky & Friends" session at Gretchen. For the session, he gathers together musician friends and special guests from his extensive network to bring a mix of soul, funk, jazz, improvised jam moments and danceable grooves to the stage.
Mocky became known for his warm, organic sound between soul, jazz, funk, hip-hop and lo-fi pop as well as for his productions for Feist, Jamie Lidell, Kelela, Moses Sumney and Vulfpeck. His work is characterized by analog recordings, lively grooves and deliberately imperfect sessions with a lot of live character. In the early 2000s, together with Chilly Gonzales, Peaches, Feist and Jamie Lidell, he shaped the Berlin expat scene between electro, punk, soul, hip-hop and performance art. He also founded the cult Dadaist underground punk band The Shit with Gonzales and Peaches.
Mocky later became a key figure in the alternative soul and jazz scene in Los Angeles. His bi-monthly residency "Mocky & Friends" developed into a meeting place for musicians, producers and improvisers from all over the world. The series stood for a counter-movement in the L.A. music scene - away from purely digital production and towards genuine interaction, characterized by spontaneous collaborations, intimate live moments, communal music-making as well as recordings with real ensembles and deep grooving sessions. Many of these collaborations have flowed directly into his albums and productions. This approach can also be found on his latest album "Music Will Explain" (Choir Music Vol. 1) on Stones Throw Records. Here, Mocky devotes himself entirely to the sound of human closeness: recorded with a choir, just one microphone and an old tape recorder.
With Mocky & Friends you can expect a collective live experience between concert and improvisation, carried by a great international band full of openness and joy of playing. You shouldn't miss this - Mocky brings a little sunshine to Berlin
