Lecture by Dr. Bernd Spyra

As part of a research project sponsored by the German Research Institute, sinologist Bernd Spyra is examining the largely unexplored collection of Chinese prints at the MARKK. It comprises around 1,300 sheets, including numerous industrially produced prints from Shanghai in the 1930s, which reveal the transition from traditional craftsmanship to industrial image culture. The lecture provides an insight into the creation and research of these extraordinary holdings and asks what they reveal about Chinese modernism, the collecting strategies of ethnology at the time and the relationship between Hamburg and Nanjing in the 1920s and 30s.
