Boat tour and visit to St. Ursula or St. Gereon

Like Rome and Santiago de Compostela, our city - et hillige Kölle - was a popular pilgrimage center in the Middle Ages. Pilgrims came to Cologne to pray and buy relics. As there was no insurance back then, people bought ankles or scraps of cloth from the vestments of saints. And Cologne had plenty of them. The relics were kept in precious boxes or caskets, venerated and worshipped. They were supposed to help people get to heaven. After all, life after death was supposed to be more beautiful than on earth. On our boat tour, we will tell you about the legend of the murder of 11,000 virgins and the fate of St. Gereon. After the 90-minute boat tour, we split up and visit either St. Ursula or St. Gereon.
Both churches are unique and very important for the history of the city of Cologne. This is because St. Ursula and St. Gereon are also the patron saints of the city. In the Golden Chamber, which is unique in Germany, we immerse ourselves directly and unashamedly in the Middle Ages. Thighs, toes, upper arm bones and complete skulls decorate the walls and convey a baroque "memento mori": remember that you are mortal.
In St. Gereon, we are enchanted by the decagonal chancel - the Dekagon - as well as the baptistery and the crypt. This church is considered by many Cologne residents to be the most beautiful Romanesque church. With the renovated Gerlingviertel next door and the QvestHotel opposite, it doesn't feel like Cologne at all. Everything here is tip-top and quiet in the middle of the city.

Note: In St. Ursula we go in small groups to the Golden Chamber. But the Romanesque church of St. Ursula itself also has a lot to offer. We walk a little longer to St. Gereon, the distance is 1.5 km. So the GereonTour is the more athletic option, as we walk over a kilometer from jetty 10 to the church.
