40-year-old Julia, a successful conductor, and her partner Georg want to have a child. Dr. Vilfort, a fertility specialist and owner of a private fertility clinic, gives them hope and recommends an experimental method. After a successful treatment at his clinic, Julia becomes pregnant. But the birth does not go as planned and the baby is immediately taken away to be treated without Julia and her husband finding out what has happened. When she is finally reunited with the child, Julia feels a strange distance. The baby's presence becomes a strain on the marriage, as Julia doubts whether the baby they have brought home is really their child.
