Melancholic, fragile, and yet playful, múm’s music has always embodied the unique atmosphere of their homeland, Iceland. It’s a soundscape that spans experimental electronica, fleeting melodies, and atmospheric spaces. At the Pop-Kultur Festival, they will present “Sonnenuhr” in the Pierre Boulez Saal—a new, performative work that brings together a string quartet with electronic and acoustic instruments. The setup is complemented by a sensor-based percussion interface in which acoustic gestures shape electronic sounds in real time. Conceived and performed by founding members Gunnar Tynes and Örvar Smárason, “Sonnenuhr” combines new compositions with versions of selected, more introspective múm tracks that have been rearranged specifically for this project. With this, múm build on their current album “History of Silence,” which was created over a two-year period in studios in southern Italy, Reykjavík, Berlin, New York, and Prague, and for which they had already worked with orchestral elements (recorded at the time by Sinfonia Nord in Akureyri and arranged by Ingi Garðar Erlendsson). Not least for this reason, “History of Silence” is at once intimate and expansive, fragmentary and coherent—a reflection on distance, closeness, and lingering in the space in between. We can therefore expect nothing less from this special Pop-Kultur evening than a concert experience that expands the boundaries of time and space, in which múm bring their very special poetic depth to life.
