MURALS AND MUSIC | Ensemble Neue Kammer

At first glance, graffiti and classical music seem to share at most a common city boundary. In most cases, operas, symphonies or chamber music are brought to life for the trained ears of a mutely astonished audience, in sophisticated environments of acoustic perfection that leave behind closed doors any noise of the disruptive factor of everyday life; Street art and graffiti artists, on the other hand, deliberately seek out the noisy aesthetics of the street corner, creating a fabric of highly individualized codes and universal symbolism between torn up asphalt and Späti, which provocatively imposes itself on the expectant eyes of the masses instead of being conveyed behind glass.

Bringing MURALS and MUSIC together is the result of a shared desire to blur otherwise clearly defined boundaries: to upset each other's concept, to rethink one's own artistic activity, one's own niche, to learn from each other, to break with established genres and genres and, at the same time, to create something new.

Since 2019, the NEUE KAMMER ensemble has been conceiving and realizing programmes that not only combine the sounds of early and new music, but also seek to bridge the gap to the performative and thus to the visual level. Benjamin Strunk and Robert Aust are freelance graffiti and mural artists whose works can already be seen on countless facades, house walls in and outside Leipzig and also on canvas.
