Music.culture.picnic.2024 - first date on June 7

The free and open-air festival series in Nordstadt enters its 20th round

The 20th edition of the Musik.Kultur.Picknick. festival series is once again offering a full program in Nordstadt this year. Two free and outdoor music events in two parks with three bands each - featuring established names as well as exciting newcomers on the Echt-Nordstadt stage.

On Friday, June 7, the Festwiese in Hoeschpark will be transformed into a stage from 5 to 9 p.m. and music lovers will get their money's worth. "SCHWARZPAUL", "Dr. Gong & die Oktopoden" and the "East Ends" will show off their skills and invite you to listen and join in. It continues on 5 July in Blücherpark in the same time slot: Dortmund bands "Drens", "The Rival Bid" and "Maybe on Stage" will then take to the stage with a rocking program. The musical styles on both days range from reggae sounds with German-language lyrics to psychedelic rock jazz, indie rock and surf punk.

Both events are free of charge and all visitors are invited to bring their own picnic. There will also be food and drink stands on site.

All bands were selected in cooperation with the Cultural Office of the City of Dortmund. "We are delighted about the long-standing cooperation with Quartiersmanagement Nordstadt and the opportunity to offer local artists a stage at the cult format Musik.Kultur.Picknick.", says Marc Debie, Head of Music at the City of Dortmund's Cultural Office. "The festival series offers a wonderful opportunity to gain an insight into the Dortmund and regional music and culture scene," he adds. For Heike Lindenblatt from the Office for Urban Renewal, the Musik.Kultur.Picknick. is also an integral part of the event year in the north of Dortmund. She draws attention to the venues: "Two parks, the 'Echt-Nordstadt Bühne', good music - a perfect setting to experience the qualities of Hoeschpark and Blücherpark in a new way. The city would also like to thank the private sponsors who are once again making the event possible." Neighbourhood manager Judith Krüger particularly emphasizes the unifying element of the music: "The Musik.Kultur.Picknick. is an open-air experience in a family atmosphere - live music and the picnic character make it easy for neighbors and visitors to get into conversation and create connections that go beyond the day."

The Musik.Kultur.Picknick. is organized by Quartiersmanagement Nordstadt. The cultural office is a cooperation partner of the event series. Further support is provided by Stadtbezirksmarketing Innenstadt-Nord and the companies DOGEWO21, Julius Ewald Schmitt GbR, LEG Wohnen NRW GmbH, SPARBAU Stiftung gGmbH and Vivawest Stiftung gGmbH as well as EDG Entsorgung Dortmund GmbH.

Quartiersmanagement Nordstadt is a project of the urban renewal program "Soziale Stadt NRW - Dortmund Nordstadt". It is funded by the federal government, the state of North Rhine-Westphalia and the city of Dortmund.

Dub Rock Reggae
SCHWARZPAUL dresses the original reggae sound of Jamaica in a contemporary, authentic guise that effortlessly alternates between vintage dub and future pop.In addition, it succeeds in presenting intelligent German-language lyrics far removed from genre-centered clichés and platitudes. It is not least the lyrics, which are close to everyday life, with which SCHWARZPAUL has achieved cross-niche pop-cultural relevance.

Dr. Gong & die Oktopoden
Psychedelic Rock Jazz
Dr. Gong und die Oktopoden unmistakably hark back to the jazz-rock of the 70s: Clever rhythms and complex harmonies, embedded in a fluid, danceable groove. The improvisations are precisely placed and yet full of emotion. There are also echoes of traditional music cultures: both jazzy-bluesy, rocky-punky and folkloristic-balladic notes find a perfect interplay in the performances.

East Ends
Indie rock
The Dortmund indie band EAST ENDS combine catchy hooks with melancholic songwriting - unmistakable on their debut EP "What's the Furthest Place from Here?" from 2015.Both raw and delicate sounds transport the listener into their world of varied songs between indie, punk and pop. Their timeless anthems, which are just crying out to be heard all over the world, have already been played at festivals such as Way back when in Dortmund and the Booze Cruise in Hamburg.

Drens
Surfpunk
A wild surfpunk four-piece from Dortmund, Drens formed at the end of 2017 through a shared love of halloumi and lo-fi tunes.The surf sound that crystallized on the DIY sing-along compilation "Sunny Side Up" is further elaborated, and the producer probably plays a certain part in this: Steffen Israel, guitarist with Kraftklub, celebrates his producer debut here and transports the band's fuzzy retro sound into the year 2020. The shimmering live energy is poured into form here and transforms barren suburbs into Southern Californian teenage utopias.

The Rival Bid
Indie rock (as a trio on the day of the event)
Indie rock as if The Smiths had pulled an all-nighter with The xx.Darkly shimmering, urgently pulling, melancholic and bittersweet. And always a pop song with brains, heart and melody. But The Rival Bid are not from London or Manchester, but from Dortmund. The four friends have been writing and recording songs in their own studio since 2011. So far, they have released four albums and several singles. Their music makes a grand gesture with simple means: Vocals, guitars, keyboards, drums. This also applies to the current singles "Easy to love", "Handle This" and "Closer".

Maybe on Stage
Classic rock, hard rock
Maybe on Stage has existed in its current constellation for two years.The members of the band come from Dortmund and the surrounding area and are dedicated to rock. Their focus is on their own music with the occasional stylistic excursion into classic rock, hard rock, sometimes progressive or even a bit heavier with metal sounds. The fun of making music is clearly in the foreground and the band is looking forward to presenting their songs to a wider audience.
