Mycelic Motions
on decay, decomposition and the abundance of life in death
is an immersive dance piece that explores the impossibility of human bodies becoming fungi. How does a mycelium move through a world of flesh and isolation? When two human bodies dissolve and their skin disintegrates - their duality is lost - do they become a unity or a multiplicity? As a response to climate collapse and mass extinction, she looks for ways to welcome contaminated and slimy forms of commonality beyond purity or transparency: an invitation to connect with each other in mycelial structures.
It seems easier to imagine an end of the world than something after capitalism. To break through this imaginary barrier, the piece turns to mushrooms and envisions a future with or as contamination. So that a future with or as contamination continues. As you live through this poetic narrative of death, grief and the hypnotic vibrancy of decay, exhale - a single long breath to enter a mycelial order of time. In this microscopic perspective of slowness and liminality, we collectively morph into a mushroom composting a dying world.
But is this real or just a glorious fable for hope in times of hopelessness?
