Nachhaltigkeitstalk zur Europawahl - Brandmauer gegen rechts - auch beim Klimaschutz?

An event organized by the Cologne Municipal Sustainability Alliance.

The climate crisis presents us with key challenges. None of the democratic parties denies man-made climate change, and reducing or tackling it is therefore a firm part of all party manifestos. However, there is a wide range in how this space is filled. Negotiations on how to deal with the climate crisis are taking place continuously at EU level in a complex manner. What unresolved issues and projects await a newly elected EU Parliament? How are the parties positioning themselves here and what can be predicted for the next few years with regard to EU climate policy?

The European elections are taking place in a specific context: not only, but also in Germany, we have been experiencing the strengthening of right-wing forces for many years, accompanied by an increasingly loud rejection of climate-friendly demands. Not only since the publication of the CORRECTIV research has this raised the question for parties: will they adapt to right-wing and regressive positions that oppose a sustainable transformation in order to avoid losing voters to parties such as the AfD? Or do they need particularly progressive climate protection projects right now to distinguish themselves from right-wing tendencies?

We want to discuss these questions with representatives of democratic parties as well as civil society actors and interested parties. Among others, we will be joined by
