Leipzig is a city on the move. This not only refers to the social movements that have become strong here or the considerable increase in mobility with industrialization, but also movement in the sense of physical culture. As early as the 16th century, there is evidence of folk festival-like events in which movement played a central role - from knights' tournaments to shooting festivals. In the 18th and 19th centuries, the culture of movement then spread to the general population and developed an enormous variety. Leipzig played a major role in the subsequent development of competitive sports - for example with the founding of associations such as the German Football Association and, of course, with 153 Olympic champions to date.
