His music moves in the field of tension between his socialization with Soviet composers, his teachers at the Moscow Conservatory, among others, and his affinity for American jazz.
The pianist and composer Roman Rofalski has studied Kapustin's work intensively. His recording "The Kapustin Project" (Sony Classical) was released in 2018, on which he focuses on compositions from the 1980s and juxtaposes them with his own works and those of his contemporaries.
In collaboration with the composer and electronic performer Paulina Sofie Kiss, Rofalski will refer to the musical material itself in this concert and create an electro-acoustic live remix. Kapustin's pieces will be looped live, chopped up and reassembled with the help of digital alienation and granular synthesis. The originals sound in their original form and are split up into musical cells, "chunks" and motifs, through which both performers then communicate with the possibilities of traditional and electronic improvisation.
